Cleaning Expansion Cards and Memory ModulesOne thing that a modern PC has a lot of is electrical contacts. The free and unhindered passage of tiny electrons is what makes a PC a PC and craggy contacts can cause odd, erratic problems that are darn hard to track down.
Whenever I fit an expansion card or memory module I always give the contacts a good visual inspection ... I'm looking for damage, dirt and especially corrosion. If you come across contacts that aren't clean then you need to take action. The easiest way I find of cleaning contacts is to use a pencil eraser (a pink one is best). Carefully wipe along the contact with it until clean. Take your time and work methodically - don't rush and try to do them all in one go!
Take precautions against ESD (Electro Static Discharge) wear a properly grounded wrist strap.
Note: Don't try this on CPU contacts pins - they are very delicate and will almost certainly be damaged or bent out of shape.
